Why we keep making things nobody asked for

Nobody asked for the song you wrote at midnight, or the cabinet you sanded back over three weekends. You made it anyway.

Making is a way of paying attention

To draw something you have to look at it longer than you normally would. Making forces a kind of attention that ordinary life rarely asks of us.

And a way of reaching someone

Most things we make are, quietly, addressed to somebody. A letter in a drawer is still a letter. Even private work carries the hope of being received.

This card sits in the Behaviour and Habits drawer and shares tags with the other two placeholders.

Letters, by email

When something new goes in the cabinet, I’ll send it to you. A few times a month at most.
